SNOWSHOEING WHEELER CREEK
from Green Pond to Ogden Canyon
January 2010 - 53 photos
Well, we did it again. Went out for some more snowshoeing. Judy, Marlene, Don, and I, went for our second trip in January of 2010. We did this one on Friday the 29th of January. Those of you who haven't tried this just don't know what you are missing. Walking through the snow out in the wild is just fantastic. So white and pristine. I don't know if our pictures can impart how wonderful it really is. Anyway, those who I have gone with agree. This time we hiked down the Wheeler Creek from the Green Pond Trailhead at Snowbasin to the Trailhead in Ogden Canyon.
Don, Marlene, Judy, and me - Lower Green Pond trail to Wheeler Creek.
We left one car at the Ogden Trailhead for Wheeler Creek just below Pineview Dam, and took a second car up to the Green Pond parking area by Snowbasin. This Trailhead has a trail going both up hill and down. The trail going up is the one that passes Green Pond on the way up. The trail going down splits into two trails, one follows the middle fork of Wheeler Creek and the other the east fork. We took the east fork which comes out at Art Nord along the Old Snowbasin road. We had lunch there then continued on down Wheeler Creek to the other car, a distance of 2 more miles. This walk was close to 5 miles total, dropping about 1,700 feet. It took us 4 hours to do it, and we decided that snowshoeing down hill is much easier.
It's fun to walk in the fresh powdered snow.
From Ogden Canyon we drove back up to the Green Pond trailhead and decided to walk up to Green Pond. That was a shorter walk, just under a mile. We couldn't really see where the summer trail ran, and in following other snowshoe tracks ended up passing Green Pond to the east. I could tell by the big pine trees to the west that we were going to miss Green Pond, so we cut across to the northwest and found it.
Combining both walks gave us almost 6 miles total, and 1,877 feet change in altitude. Fortunately most of that was down hill. It was a nice day, but very cold. Cold doesn't bother snowshoers much, as it strenuous work.
